Theatre Honors 367.01: America on Stage

Posted on: 02/05/2006

Section: MW 10:30-12:18
Instructor: Professor Valerie Lucas
Email: lucas.219@osu.edu

This course examines theatrical representation of Asian Americans in plays and in performance. The course will begin with an interrogation of images of Asian Americans, and the cultural assumptions and judgments inherent in such representation. The course will relate key events of the Asian American diaspora (such as Chinese migration, anti-Oriental immigration acts, the internment of Japanese Americans, the Vietnam war, and post 9-11 'Islamophobia') and analyze how these inform theatrical representation in the works of playwrights such as David Henry Hwang, Velina Hasu Houston, Tanika Gupta, and others. The course will use lectures, screenings, student-led seminars, and a practical project: a short dramatic presentation devised from primary source materials such as interviews and life-writings. It will fulfill the 2nd Writing and Social Diversity GECs. Do join us - it's fun, creative and have no fear if you've never written a play or been on a stage…this course will show you how!
