Graduate Research Assistant
Position Description

BACKGROUND: Community Research Partners (CRP) is a non-profit organization formed in 2000 as a partnership of United Way of Central Ohio, the City of Columbus and the John Glenn Institute at The Ohio State University to provide measurement, evaluation and research services for human services and community development programs, funders and policymakers. CRP has ten full-time and three part-time staff.
POSITION REPORTS TO: Director of Community Data Services, Director of Research Services, or another full-time CRP staff person, with specific reporting relationship based on CRP’s staffing needs.
JOB SUMMARY: Two part-time positions (20 hours per week) during the 2006-07 academic year (Sept. 20, 2006-June 8, 2007). Responsible for providing support for CRP's research, evaluation and/or community data projects or programs.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: The Research Assistants will:
1. Assist in undertaking CRP research, evaluation, planning and/or community data projects, including data collection, entry and analysis; instrument design and testing; interview, survey and focus group research; Internet research; and literature reviews.
2. Assist in preparing reports, presentations and other information in formats useful to partners, clients, the general public and other audiences, including formatting of narrative, graphs and tables, fact-checking and proofreading.
3. Work as part of a project team in collaboration with CRP staff and contractors.
4. Represent the organization as needed at meetings and other forums with a variety of agencies, groups and organizations.
5. Undertake other special projects as needed.

REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES: The Research Assistants will have the following skills and abilities:
1. Bachelor’s degree in a human service, social science, public policy, urban planning, or related discipline.
2. Current enrollment in a graduate school, and working toward a graduate degree, in one of the above disciplines or a related discipline.
3. Strong writing skills, with the ability to make complex topics understandable to a variety of readers.
4. Professional and interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively with a team of CRP staff and in the community.
5. Proficient in the use of standard office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
6. Strong creative and critical thinking and problem solving skills.
7. Well organized and detail oriented.
8. Able to effectively manage multiple tasks.
9. Able to work independently and as part of a small team in a challenging, fast-paced environment.

DESIRABLE SKILLS & ABILITIES:
1. Knowledge of demographic, economic and socioeconomic data sources (Census, etc.) and experience in data collection and analysis methods.
2. Familiarity with quantitative and qualitative research and analysis methods, practices and processes.
3. Experienced in the use database software (Access).
4. Experienced in the use of GIS software (ArcView/ArcGIS).
5. Experienced in the use of a statistical analysis software package (e.g., SPSS, SAS, etc.).
