CALL FOR PAPERS & PRESENTATIONS (Deadline: April 30, 2006)
International Conference on the Hawaii Filipino Centennial
Dec. 13-17, 2006, Ala Moana Hotel, Honolulu HI <http://www.alamoanahotel.com/> ($139 plus tax for double room)
Proposals are now being accepted for panel, roundtable, individual and video presentations for the International Conference, which will address the centennial theme "Filipinos in Hawaii: A Hundred Years and Beyond." But proposals can also touch on broader contemporary Philippine issues, Philippine immigration, international Filipino communities, the Filipino diaspora, such as:
* Theories on international migration
* The U.S. annexation of the Philippines and Hawaii
* Places of origin of the first sakadas (Visayas, Ilocos, Central Luzon, etc.)
* Settler destinations of Filipino migrants (Mindanao, Hawaii, California)
* Labor recruitment practices of the Hawaii Sugar Planters' Association (HSPA)
* Filipinos in Hawaii and the U.S. prior to 1906
* Conditions on the sugar plantations (Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Big Island, etc.)
* Filipino participation in Hawaii labor strikes (1920s, 30s, 40s, 50s)
* Filipino communities on continental U.S. (California, Oregon, Louisiana, etc.)
* Immigration waves from the Philippines before & after WW II
* Post-1965 Filipino immigration to Hawaii and U.S.
* Filipino communities in Europe, Middle East, Australia, Asia, Africa, etc.
* Globalization and gender issues in Filipino international migration
* Overseas workers, the "balikbayan" experience and foreign remittances
* Returning Filipinos for retirement, business and other purposes
* Issues on Filipino participation in U.S. local, state and national
politics
* Education, entrepreneurship, politics, language, arts, science, and the professions
* Filipino cultural preservation in international settings
* Identity, family, and other social issues in Filipino overseas communities
* Filipino organizations in Hawaii/U.S. and international communities
* Filipinos in the U.S. military services
* Other related topics can be proposed
NO travel assistance will be available. A hotel package for 5 nights (from Wed to Sun) and a registration fee ($195 regular and $175 pre-registration) are being worked out.
