Japanese 231: Elements of Japanese Culture

A survey of the literature, art, religion, philosophy, and social institutions of the Japanese people from the earliest to the most recent times. Topics will cover the multiplicity of experiences of the Japanese across time and space encompassing not only the centers and margins of Japanese society, but also the diasporic experiences of ethnic Japanese in the United States (mainland and Hawaii) and Brazil and the attending re-contextualizations of Japan and Japanese identity.
