2005-2006 Chinese & Japanese Studies Writing Prize

Posted on: 02/12/2006

The Institute for Chinese Studies and the Institute for Japanese Studies are jointly announcing the 2005/06 Chinese & Japanese Studies Writing Prize for undergraduate OSU students. A faculty committee representing different areas and disciplines will adjudicate the competition.

Awards will be given in two writing categories, namely

* research papers (10 pages or more) and

* essays (10 pages or less)

for work that combines synthesis of existing scholarship with original analysis.

The papers/essays can derive from any discipline or methodological framework as long as issues pertinent to China/Japan or Chinese/Japanese-speaking areas are either the focus of the paper or form a vital component of a comparative project. The papers/essays have to be written in English for courses taught between summer quarter 2005 to spring quarter 2006 (June 2005-June 2006). Students have to be currently enrolled at OSU in order to be eligible.

* From faculty, we solicit the name(s) of students whose paper(s) they have read and would want to recommend for consideration. We also encourage faculty to contact students and encourage them to submit their work directly.
* From students, we ask that they submit a clean copy of the work(s) to be considered. Each student can submit one paper in each of the two categories

The deadline for receipt of the papers/essays to be considered for the awards is June 10, 2006. Email submissions are not acceptable. Four clean hard copies of the paper devoid of all forms of identification together with a separate sheet with the student's name and complete contact information (address, phone number, email), title of paper, major and academic rank, the course for which the paper was written, and the professor who taught it, ought to be delivered either to the Institute for Chinese Studies (318 Oxley Hall) or the Institute for Japanese Studies (321 Oxley Hall), 1712 Neil Ave., OSU, Columbus, OH 43210.

The amount of the awards will range from $100 to $250 dollars for research papers and $50 to $150 dollars for essays. If the submitted papers/essays do not meet the committee's criteria of originality, soundness and clarity, the committee reserves the right not to issue any award. Announcements will be made by July 2005.

Please forward nominations and submit any questions either to the Institute for Chinese Studies at sieber.6@osu.edu or to the Institute for Japanese Studies at stucky.7@osu.edu.
